Artist Statement
These collages arose from a consideration of the multiple meanings and uses of the word “dream,” historically and in our own contemporary popular culture. Exploring those meanings and uses, I began to associate colors and images with them. Word play added an unexpected element of fun to the process. Of course, technically, a dream can be a nightmare (or turn into one) -- a good reminder to be careful what we wish for.
Bio
Jeanne Lawrence began her college career as an art major, but went on to study anthropology, English literature, American history, and architectural history, eventually earning a Ph.D. in American Studies. She grew up in southern California, then lived and studied in Virginia; Illinois; Connecticut; Washington, D.C.; England; and Scotland. For the past 22 years she has taught American history and the humanities in Chico, California. Lawrence began working in the medium of collage a few years ago and enjoys turning found objects and ephemera into something new. Her main inspiration is the work of the German Dadaist Kurt Schwitters, who created beautiful collages out of the detritus he found on the streets of Germany after the First World War.
